Aluwiharaya temple is a very important historical place that
located in Matale District. The main significance of this is the glorification
of the Tripitaka. That was around 89 BC. The Aluwiharaya Temple become
world famous after the 5th Buddhist
Council and the glorification of the Tripitaka for the first time in the world.
Last Saturday I went to Aluwiharaya with a friend. There I collected
a number of photos of the amazing location among the large rock caves. Also, the
roofs of Buddha image house were made of huge rocks. There were some places where
large rocks were trapped by small boulders. They are really amazing.
The old stupa
of the Aluwiharaya is located at a considerable height from the ground level. From
there, the surroundings look very admirable. Riverstone and knuckles mountains can
also be seen there. The Aluwiharaya Temple
holds an annual procession. It was started in July 1973. This procession which
has been since then and it named “SANGAYANA MAHA PERAHARA”. During this
procession, those who like to climb mountains climb the huge rocks in
Aluwiharaya.
About five
years ago, a huge Buddha statue created in the hill above the temple. I have
not been to there yet but visitors say that from there can see many beautiful
places in Matale. I’m also planning to go see there soon.
So, when you
come to Matale don’t forget to visit the Aluwiharaya Temple.
